TRAINING ON SMUGGLING OF MIGRANTS, MODUS OPERANDI AND INDICATORS FOR SMUGGLING OF MIGRANTS IN THE WESTERN BALKANS

On 23rd of March 2018, within the regional project “Enhancing capacities and mechanism to identify and protect vulnerable migrants in the Western Balkans – PHASE II” funded by U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), IOM Skopje organized training on Smuggling of migrants, modus operandi and indicators for smuggling of migrants in the Western Balkans for 20 representatives from the Ministry of Interior, Sector for Border Affairs and Migration and all four country Regional Centers for Border Affairs. The aim of the training was to teach police officials how to identify people smuggling in migrant flows and to present them the facts and main recommendations based on the Regional Report “Mapping of the Smuggling Migrants in Region of Western Balkan”.

The training was focused on: particularities of irregular migration in SEE, Identification routes and hubs; Migrant Smuggling in SEE, Modus operandi and particularities of the smuggling process; Law enforcement cooperation and information sharing, LE cooperation and challenges, response to information sharing; Indicators of Smuggling of Migrants in the Western Balkan; and the necessity of a strategic/holistic approach and discussions regarding EU policies and counter migrant smuggling.
